What is Classics?

We study the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome — everything from mythology to military history, from poetry to pottery, and from excavation to epigraphy! We offer courses on Greek and Latin language and literature, ancient history, and Bronze Age or Classical archaeology. Our major is interdisciplinary and will develop not only your knowledge of the ancient world, but also your skills in critical thinking, research, and writing.

The Department of Classics at the University of Cincinnati is one of the best places in the country to study the ancient world. On this page you can find out more about our undergraduate programs (major, minors, and certificates) and resources.

What can I do with a Classics degree?

The question is, what can't you do with a Classics degree?  All employers and professional school admissions committees know that Classics students have mastered hard subjects and become excellent researchers and critical thinkers, as well as practiced and creative communicators.  Recent Classics graduates have gone on to excellent post-graduate programs in archaeology and languages, as well as professional programs like law school, medical school, or divinity school. Others are now teaching high school Latin, working in museums, libraries, and archives, or in various aspects of business and public service.

Classics students often continue to grad school and careers teaching ancient languages, history, or archaeology at all levels, but their strong and varied education enables them to pursue many other fields. Since you have such a wide choice, go for a career you think you'll love - but always have a Plan B.

Here are some suggestions for choosing your plans for after graduation as a Classics major.
