The Piet de Jong Watercolors
Finds from the Neolithic "Cave"
In his 1975 Hesperia article, John L. (“Jack”) Caskey publishes the finds from the so-called “cave” on the Tsoungiza hill that Carl W. Blegen’s team excavated in 1925 and 1926-1927. He continues that his article essentially publishes Blegen’s own unpublished manuscript, and Caskey adds numerous illustrations, including those from “eight sheets of watercolors by Piet de Jong” (Caskey 1975, 253). But aside from one vessel – N-017 – none are in color. Presented below are the other extant watercolors, including both unpublished ones and also those that were cut apart and pasted on the plates for the article (click on an image for both a larger view and the metadata associated with each one).
Finds from the Rawson Deposit
Signe Barfoed, in both her 2009 MA thesis and her 2017 Hesperia article, publishes the finds from what she labels the "Rawson Deposit" that was excavated in 1925. She includes the Piet de Jong watercolors that remain extant, and they are presented here as well (click on an image for both a larger view and the metadata associated with each one).
