Jar with Griffins
Restored by Stella Bouzaki in 1976 from 75
sherds that make up 3 major fragments (ca. 20%
of the whole), giving full shape and profile
from rim nearly to bottom. A dozen loose/sherds.
Dimensions as restored (approximate): H.0.69
(originally probably 0.72-0.75); D.body 0.55%;
D.rim 0.29; D.bottom (missing, presumed flat)
0.20.

Biscuit: gray core, buff surface, worn esp. in
lower parts. Body ovoid, outturned rim.
Lead clamps.
Decorated in matt red with black outlines and d
details: on shoulder and side 3 big griffins,
right, not identical but presumably similar;
heads raised, crested; wings extended upward,
K.4331, cont.
left; tails spiralled at tip. Band on neck;
wavy bands above and below zone with griffins;
rosettes as filling ornaments (see drawing by
Alice Fäthke). Decoration, if any, on lower
body lost through erosion.
