DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Marlowe\, Colgate University\, will present an AIA
lecture\, "Decolonizing the Classical Collections\," at 6:00 pm in Dyer
350 (in Teachers' College\, aka "CECH"). A reception will follow. Abstr
act: What can those of us in the field of classical art and archaeology
learn from recent “decolonizing” practices in the field of Native Americ
an museology? Since its enactment in 1990\, the Native American Graves P
rotection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) has prompted a radical transform
ation in how museums conceive of their holdings of Native American objec
ts. Huge quantities of material have been returned to descendant communi
ties. For the Native American works still in their collections\, many mu
seums have developed new strategies for sharing curatorial authority wit
h members of those communities. Can this “decolonizing” paradigm help us
rethink how we talk about the objects in classical museum collections?
Might an embrace of some of these new methodologies help us out of the i
mpasse that currently pits museums against archaeologists? This talk wil
l focus less on repatriation and more on the choices museums make about
which stories to tell about their classical holdings\, and how they choo
se to tell them. Dyer is the building to the right of Blegen as you exit
. It is also called "Teachers' College\," or "CECH." Same thing.

DESCRIPTION:Caleb Simone will share his groundbreaking research on the a
rchaeology and cultural history of aulos\, the musical instrument that a
ccompanied Greek tragedy and comedy (among other genres) in Blegen 308.
See abstract below: Sumphonein: Auloi and the Archaeology of Sound in Th
eophrastus’ History of Plants For the past twenty-five years\, scholarsh
ip has increasingly revealed the cultural prominence of the double-pipe
reed woodwind known as auloi in Ancient Greece: the booming instrument n
ot only drove musical theory\, notation\, and innovation\, but also mark
ed a shifting social history\, drawing fire from Plato and Aristotle as
it thrilled the masses in the theater and symposium. Our knowledge of wh
at auloi sounded like\, however\, has been extremely limited. Studies of
archaeologically secure instruments have only been published within the
past two decades and the reed mouthpieces that are essential for their
sounding have not survived. One textual source\, however\, provides some
clues. In his History of Plants\, Theophrastus preserves an account of
reeds for aulos mouthpieces. This talk documents a five-year collaborati
on between a philologist and early music and woodwind specialists to ana
lyze\, interpret\, and apply Theophrastus’ account in order to reconstru
ct mouthpieces for auloi. The presentation will include images of the pr
ocess and audio of the results\, with discussion of how the reeds in tur
n are yielding insights into the archaeological models of auloi that sur
 vive.

DESCRIPTION:Shannon Dunn (Bryn Mawr) will speak on “Poseidon in the Saro
nic Gulf: Seascapes and Regional Cult in a Maritime Community”  in 308 B
legen. There will be a reception immediately after.\nThis talk explores
the three main sanctuaries of Poseidon around the Saronic Gulf: Sounion\
, Isthmia\, and Kalaureia\, and their relationships to the communities o
f the Gulf. Coastal temples served as religious spaces\, navigational ai
ds\, and markers of political and cultural territories. Temples of Posei
don are often found in these coastal locations\, on high places such as
hills or promontories\, outside the city walls at territorial edges\, an
d situated along major routes of travel. By considering issues of visual
connectivity\, approachability\, manipulation of the landscape\, and di
stances from roads and harbors\, we will observe not only specific and l
ocal relationships between Poseidon\, his sanctuaries\, and the landscap
e\, but also some Saronic trends\, including the role of Athens.\nThis t
alk is sponsored by the AIA.

DESCRIPTION:This talk will take place in Blegen 308.\nIn his Letter 79 (
probably written in c. AD 64) Seneca asks his addressee\, Lucilius\, who
was then serving as procurator of Sicily\, to send him a report on his
travels around the island\, including information specifically on Charyb
dis and Lucilius’ climb up Mount Etna. In addition to this “scientific t
ourism”\, Seneca encourages Lucilius to attempt a new poem on Etna\, “th
e venerated theme of every poet” (Ep. 79.5) and not to be deterred from
doing so by the fact that there are already prominent literary works tha
t offer remarkable descriptions of Etna. In my paper\, I will first brie
fly discuss the implications of Seneca’s choice to single out Vergil’s a
nd Ovid’s works as the specific volcanic intertexts against which not on
ly Lucilius\, but also he himself will initiate the process of literary
emulation. In this connection\, I will also explore the significance for
Seneca of the fact that Lucretius’ volcanic passages -to which Seneca d
oes not refer overtly- are the dominant intertexts for both Vergil and O
vid. I will then discuss the principle of multiple explanations and the
notion of the sublime\, two prevailing thematic themes that the Epistle
79 shares with the Natural Questions (in particular Books 3 and 4a) and
which are conditioned by Seneca’s intertextual reception of Lucretius an
 d Ovid.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Hanne Eisenfeld\, Associate Professor of Classics\,
Boston College.\nTitle: Mythologizing Kroisos in Bacchylides 3\n \n\nTi
me and Place: Blegen 308\, 5:30-6:30 pm\, March 26. Reception to Follow.
\n \n\n\nAbstract: Bacchylides’ third epinician ode celebrates the Olymp
ian chariot victory of Hieron of Syracuse. It also  includes a distinctl
y un-celebratory narrative: the near-immolation of the Lydian king Krois
os and the fall of his city\, Sardis. Why does Bacchylides tell this sto
ry?  In the early fifth century when the ode was composed\, Kroisos was
undergoing a process of mythologization: both a powerful political figur
 e of recent memory and\, increasingly and simultaneously\, a larger-than
-life figure subject to retelling and reinterpretation. I argue that Kro
isos’ complex status is foundational to the poetic work of the ode. By d
rawing on multiple contemporary discourses around Hieron and Kroisos\, B
acchylides first exploits the many parallels between the two rulers\, es
pecially their status as opulent Delphic dedicators\, but then promises
a sharp distinction in the nature of their legacies. Through his epinici
an – says Bacchylides – Hieron will be remembered as an exceptional man
defined by his deeds and contexts\, not as a malleable myth. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Prof. Gretchen Meyers of Franklin & Marshall College will gi
ve the first AIA lecture this year on "A Day in the Life of an Etruscan
Sanctuary: Gender\, Community and Ritual at the Etruscan Site of Poggio
Colla" in room 308 Blegen. The Etruscan hilltop site of Poggio Colla\, l
ocated in the Italian region of Tuscany approximately 22 miles northeast
of Florence\, offers a unique view of an ancient sanctuary with continu
ous activity between the 7th-2nd centuries BCE. Excavation from 1995-201
5 revealed a sequence of monumental religious structures and material cu
lture from the site. Noteworthy finds such as bronze votive figurines\,
large quantities of ceramic textile tools\, a deposit of gold jewelry an
d a sandstone stele with the inscribed name of the divinity Uni (the Etr
uscan “Hera”) point to a strong female component within the site’s ritua
l activity. In addition\, excavated evidence for habitation and a signif
icant ceramic and roof tile production center on the hillside documents
groups of individuals living and working within the sanctuary community.
This lecture provides a fresh look at the life of a sanctuary in ancien
t Etruria by demonstrating what archaeological evidence can tell us abou
t the diverse crowd of worshippers who participated in the ceremonies an
d operations at an ancient religious site. At Poggio Colla rich evidence
for communal rituals such as banqueting\, weaving and spinning\, and va
ried production activities that were part of the operation and maintenan
ce of the sanctuary reveal an ancient community of individuals joined by
common beliefs and behaviors\, as much as by the built environment.

SUMMARY:Dana Munteanu: Characters in the EN and the Poet. The case of Neopt

DESCRIPTION:Aristotle twice refers to Neoptolemus from Sophocles’ Philoct

though he appears to do so at a superficial glance. Aristotle's close read

DESCRIPTION:Please note that this lecture will take place at the Taft Ce

or the Study of the Ancient World) will be giving a public lecture at th
e Taft Center for the Humanities.  His lecture will address how new deve
lopments in digital language processing can be applied to Latin corpora
(full abstract below).\n \nThe Digital Afterlife of a Dead Language: Or
Recovering 34 Billion(!) Latin Words from AI Training Data\n \nLatin has
been a perhaps unexpected beneficiary of recently published Large Langu
age Model (LLM) training datasets. For example\, an artificial intellige
nce firm just released a text repository advertising 34 billion Latin to
kens—a number over 5\,000 times larger than a comprehensive repository o
f canonically classical Latin like the Perseus Digital Library. The numb
er is so outstandingly large relative to other Latin collections—“unfath
omable” in the parlance of AI critique—that it demands a fuller accounti
ng of what it means for humanities scholars to work with such collection
s\, leading us to ask questions like—What novel methods are necessary to
explore such a library? How do we handle the massive amount of textual
corruption found in these volumes? What tools and models can we build—an
d build responsibly—with that amount of textual data? In this talk\, I w
ill bring in threads from natural language processing\, cryptography\, a
nd textual criticism\, among other disciplines\, to redefine philology a
t scale for our computational\, LLM-inflected moment. While the presenta
tion will lead with examples from Latin texts\, the talk invites humanit
ies scholars working in any language or literature to reflect on how iss
ues of training data quantity and quality affect their areas of research
 .

\nDuring the Iron Age\, numerous Syro-Anatolian cities were built with the
new and experimental architectural technology of carved orthostats which
embellished their public buildings and urban spaces from Karkamish to Mala
tya. Phyrgian cities such as Ankara and Gordion participated in such share
d spatial politics. The excavations at the mound of Yassıhöyük (identif
ied with ancient Gordion) provide some of the most reliable and detailed s
tratified archaeological evidence for a nuanced understanding of the urban
history of an Anatolian Iron Age citadel. After the collapse of Late Bron
ze Age imperial network in Anatolia and the Eastern Mediterranean world\,
Yassıhöyük slowly emerged as a new Anatolian capital city where the urb
an space is produced with innovative architectural technologies\, building
forms\, and a brand new repertoire of visual representation that linked t
his Phrygian center to the cultural realm of the emergent Syro-Hittite sta
tes in Northern Syro-Mesopotamia and Southeastern Turkey. From the last ce
ntury of the 2nd millennium BCE to the massive destruction of its citadel\
, which is now dated to 830-800 BCE based on radiocarbon dating\, dendroch
ronology\, and meticulous study of stratified evidence (Rose and Darbyshir
e eds. 2011)\, Yassıhöyük citadel witnessed several phases of building
projects and architectural experimentation\, as well as the introduction o
f cut stone masonry and carved stone orthostats in monumental architecture
. This paper reviews the archaeological and architectural evidence for suc
h an innovative period of rapid development in the urban history of the ci
ty and suggests that the building projects at Gordion could be compared to
the idea of urban foundations\, known from the Assyrian Empire\, Syro-Hit
tite states and Urartu further East

iv>During the Iron Age\, numerous Syro-Anatolian cities were built with th
e new and experimental architectural technology of carved orthostats which
embellished their public buildings and urban spaces from Karkamish to Mal
atya. Phyrgian cities such as Ankara and Gordion participated in such shar
ed spatial politics. The excavations at the mound of Yassıhöyük (identi
fied with ancient Gordion) provide some of the most reliable and detailed
stratified archaeological evidence for a nuanced understanding of the urba
n history of an Anatolian Iron Age citadel. After the collapse of Late Bro
nze Age imperial network in Anatolia and the Eastern Mediterranean world\,
Yassıhöyük slowly emerged as a new Anatolian capital city where the ur
ban space is produced with innovative architectural technologies\, buildin
g forms\, and a brand new repertoire of visual representation that linked
this Phrygian center to the cultural realm of the emergent Syro-Hittite st
ates in Northern Syro-Mesopotamia and Southeastern Turkey. From the last c
entury of the 2nd millennium BCE to the massive destruction of its citadel
\, which is now dated to 830-800 BCE based on radiocarbon dating\, dendroc
hronology\, and meticulous study of stratified evidence (Rose and Darbyshi
re eds. 2011)\, Yassıhöyük citadel witnessed several phases of building
projects and architectural experimentation\, as well as the introduction
of cut stone masonry and carved stone orthostats in monumental architectur
 e. This paper reviews the archaeological and architectural evidence for su
ch an innovative period of rapid development in the urban history of the c
ity and suggests that the building projects at Gordion could be compared t
o the idea of urban foundations\, known from the Assyrian Empire\, Syro-Hi
ttite states and Urartu further East</div>

DESCRIPTION:This paper examines a neglected episode in the reception of
Lucretius by Seneca through the mediation of Neronian poetry\, focusing
on Seneca’s sole explicit quotation of Nero’s verse in the Naturales Qua
estiones (QNat. 1.5.6-7). Set within a technical discussion of the rainb
 ow\, the quotation—likely drawn from Nero’s lost Troica—reveals a dense
network of Lucretian\, Epicurean\, and Stoic intertexts. The paper argue
s that Seneca’s apparent praise of Nero’s poetic elegance conceals a com
plex strategy of doublespeak. Nero’s Lucretian imagery\, deployed by a f
ictional adversarius to support a chromatic (rather than catoptric) expl
anation of the rainbow\, aligns the emperor’s poetry with Epicurean mete
orology and with an ultimately erroneous physical theory rejected by Sto
icism. By situating this citation within broader debates on optical illu
sion\, color\, and epistemology—from Hellenistic scepticism to Lucretius
’ atomism—the paper shows how Seneca subtly undermines Nero’s solar self
-fashioning. The dove of Venus\, echoing Lucretian atomic imagery\, take
s on “color\, not image” (colorem\, non imaginem)\, thereby exposing the
instability of poetic imitation and political symbolism alike. Seneca’s
engagement with Nero thus emerges as a sophisticated instance of mediat
ed Lucretian reception\, in which intertextual allusion becomes a vehicl
e for philosophical critique and oblique political commentary.

DESCRIPTION:The talk focuses on Tiberius’s reported speech in Ann. 2.38.
This impactful speech captures Tiberius’s\nresponse to Marcius Hortalus
\, the grandson of the famed orator Quintus Hortensius Hortalus\, who\na
ppealed for financial assistance and\, in his request\, addressed Tiberi
us and the Senate\, stressing that having children was not his idea at a
ll. The significance of this passage in Tacitus’ historiography is three
fold. First\, it marks the first instance of direct speech attributed to
Tiberius in the Annales.\nSecond\, it enables us to explore the intrica
te relationship between Tiberius’s internal politics and\nAugustus\, who
is prominently referenced by both Hortalus and Tiberius in their speech
es. Third\, it\nprovides a cross-section of the dynamics between the pri
nceps and the senators in the aftermath of\nAugustus’ death.
