Thea Smith is an archaeologist and a classics generalist.  She has participated in excavations in California, Central America and Greece, and has twice directed undergraduate travel-study programs in Greece.  Teaching has allowed her to develop a broad array of interests in classics, art history and anthropology.   She has taught introductory and intermediate Greek and Latin; ancient, medieval and modern art history; as well as world prehistory, origins of civilization, and the archaeology of the Maya.  At present she regularly offers undergraduate courses in Greek, Roman, and Egyptian archaeology; ancient Egyptian history; and the myths and religions of Egypt and Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome, and the Celts and Norse; augmented on occasion by more specialized courses such as sex and gender or magic in the ancient world.  Her research interests include Bronze Age Aegean archaeology, the early civilizations of Egypt and the Near East, ancient religious beliefs and practices, sex and gender in ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt, and the roles of magic in ancient society.
