Thymum (θύμον) was also used for a number of plants including so-called 'Cretean thyme', or 'Spanish Oregano', which has undergone a variety of baptisms. Officially now,* it is Coridothymus capitatus (L.) Rchb. f. (Oesterr. Bot. Wochenbl. 7:161. 1857), that is, a closely related but separate genus; the next most common name is Thymus capitatus (L.) Hoffmanns. & Link, followed by Thymbra capitata (L.) Cav., and Satureja capitata (L.).
