Identified by Jashemski (2002: 161) as Rubus ulmifolius Schott, a particularly invasive weed. Vergil treats the bramble as something fit only for goats to nibble on and good for weaving baskets. There is no mention of tasty berries, which seems to let out R. idaeus, rasberries, or R. fruticosus, blackberries (contra Abbe 1965: 109); Maggiuli (1995: 432) labels rubus as merely "voce botanica generica."
