G. 2.66: Herculeaeque arbos umbrosa coronae. Hercules made a crown of the white poplar to celebrate his return from Hades (cf. E. 7.61 with Servius, A. 8.276 with Servius).
Picture 2 shows nicely the white underside of the leaves. The black poplar (P. nigra), now very common, appears first in the eighteenth century.
