Abbe (1962, 119) identified lotus as "Melilotus italica" (not in Flora Eur.; only M. italicus (L.) Lam. is an accepted nomen), and Maggiuli as Melilotus. spp.. However, only M. officinalis, yellow sweet clover, is generally grown as a fodder plant in Italy. M. alba, white sweet clover, is a common Italian roadside weed.
