An invasive weed; the "tares" of the King James Bible in the parable of the sower, Matt. 13.24-30 (KJV) (Greek). The usual Greek for Lolium temulentum is αἶρα. The New Testament uses a semitic loan word ζιζάνιον. The Vulgate merely transliterated as zizania; the first Wyclif version translated "dernel or cokil" but the Purvey revision translated as "tares," and was followed by Tindale, and hence the KJV.
