For three-quarters of a century the Department of Classics of the University of Cincinnati has organized and supported archaeological research projects in the Mediterranean. These endeavors reflect a commitment to sustained archaeological research that is paralleled by the efforts of few other academic institutions in the United States
On Sunday February 15 2004 from 3-5 pm, the Department of Classics and the Classics Library will celebrate 80 years of Mediterranean Archaeology with an open house and lecture series.
These will take place on the 3rd floor of the Blegen Library.
The schedule for the events:
3:00 Welcome and Introductions. Jacquie Riley, Head Librarian, John Miller Burnam Classical Library.
3:05. The Beginnings of Archaeology at UC. Jack L. Davis, Carl W. Blegen Professor of Greek Archaeology
3:20. The Excavations at Troy under Blegen. C. Brian Rose, Professor of Classics and Head of the Department of Classics
3:30. Cedric Boulter and the Teaching of Ancient Art at UC. Gisela Walberg, Marion Rawson Professor of Greek Prehistory.
3:40. Blegen's First Excavation at UC. Susan Petrakis, Adjunct Professor, University of Arizona, Tucson.
4:00. Tea and Refreshments. Exhibits of Antiquities and Publications in the Classics Library, organized by Carol Hershenson, Curator of the Archives of the Department of Classics and by Kathleen Lynch, Assistant Professor of Classics.
A special commemorative booklet celebrating eight decades of archaeological research sponsored by the Department of Classics will be distributed to all in attendance at this event.
