AIA 2005 Workshop: Practical Field Computing II: Digital Photography from Field to Print

John Wallrodt - Dept of Classics, University of Cincinnati
Sebastian Heath - American Numismatic Society
Garett Holden - Colin Cowie Productions
Carol Stein - Editor, Hesperia

This page links to supplemental information illustrating the techniques explained in the papers given in Boston on January 8, 2005.

The goal of the workshop was to provide a complete workflow for the best use of digital photography in the field. We aimed to show how to shoot a camera, how to organize the images so that they can be used later, and how to edit them for electronic submission to scholarly journals for publication.

To that end, we also brought people with lots of practical experience. Garett Holden is a professional photographer who has experience with high-end digital cameras in difficult conditions. Sebastian Heath has worked out the math necessary to easily scale finds for publication. John Wallrodt has helped with the whole production from excavation to publication. Carol Stein is the monograph editor for Hesperia and is the one responsible for writing digital image guidelines for authors.

The essentials of the workflow that we described are as follows:

  • If you are intending to photograph for print publication, start with a good camera
  • shoot at the highest quality jpeg setting that your camera allows
  • archive your images in this format, use them for research, etc.
  • after you select your images for publication, copy them from the original archive. At that point, each time you open and save the image, save it in tiff format. This will prevent the loss of more visual information.

The files and notes are linked at the left. The photo samples describes the production of the poster that was distributed. The helmet photos page goes links to the raw and edited photographs of the helmet on the poster. Coin photos describes the ANS method for photographing and editing coins. Organization has links to the database tutorials for organizing your images. Publication has some files and ideas from Carol concerning the submission of electronic files for publication.

Practical Field Computing II follows on the heels of the first Practical Field Computing workshop at the 2002 AIA meeting in Philadelphia.
