We have an exciting year of lectures planned, starting on October 7, 2009 with a lecture by Professor Robert Lindley Vann from the School of Architecture at the University of Maryland. Dr. Vann will discuss his work on the 5th century B.C. monumental palace and garden complex of Kasayapa at Sigiriya (Sri Lanka), an engineering masterpiece that incorporates a massive rock outcrop. In November, James Russell, from the University of British Columbia, will discuss the life of a Roman soldier serving in Turkey, as reconstructed from a fragmentary bronze tablet. In April, we will host the Charles Eliot Norton Memorial lecturer, Dr. John Hale, from the University of Louisville. Dr. Hale will discuss his fascinating research on the Delphic oracle and related sites, using his interdisciplinary approach that integrates geoarchaeological methods into the analysis of Greek sanctuaries. In addition, the local society may sponsor other lecturers not on the AIA circuit throughout the year. Check back often, since updates to the schedule will be posted regularly on our website.
